Since GTA3, one of the most important games of all time (it invented open world action games as we know them today) R* has been on an incredible hotstreak. They made games like R* Table Tennis which, whilst it was never going to set the world alight was lovingly crafted and served as a great appetiser for what their new Rage and Euphoria tech could achieve.
Looking at titles like Manhunt, LA Noire (although it was technically Team Bondi) The Warriors, Midnight Club and Smugglers Run shows that R* only make solid titles and I actually thought that Midnight Club 3 was head and shoulders above NFS Underground 2 in terms of pure arcade racing, car selection and visual flair. They turned to portable platforms with the GTA 'stories' games (San Andreas Stories on Vita please) and Chinatown Wars and nailed that as well, something many developers cannot achieve.
And then we move to their bonafide masterpieces. Vice City, San Andreas and Bully are still brilliant to this day, and whilst the graphics may age the addictive gameplay, brilliant mission structure, razor sharp parodies and lovingly crafted environments means that doesn't matter.
Moving into this gen R* first gave us GTA4 which really divided people. I can't understand why as what they created was a living breathing city which still hasn't been bettered and an eccentric collection of deep (for the most part) characters with that same GTA gameplay at the core, albeit, with a more serious tone. People complained it lacked the fun of previous titles so after releasing the very dark, and very SoA, Lost and the Damned, R* responded with The Ballad of Gay Tony which brought back the craziness without compromising the tone they'd put in place during Nicos story.
They then raised the bar for open world titles further with the majestically brilliant Red Dead Redemption which was so detailed, so tangible, that I got lost in it with John Marston for a very long time. Mostly playing poker during storms and being mauled by bears.
And then what does R* do. Well, they make an almost perfect 3rd person shooter. Max Payne 3. They mature the IP stamping their own slick and distinctive mark on it but at the same time stay true to Remedys original games. It's no surprise that Max Payne 3 is sumptuously detailed and unbelievably well polished as R* are known for that.
So, what next for R*. Well GTA5 is inbound. Set in Los Santos and the surrounding countryside. Inevitable really considering GTA4's living city and RDR's glorious countryside and wildlife. Why not combine them?
We could be seeing GTA5 sooner rather than later as well with Take Two upping their profit forecasts by a lot for this financial year and their other big hitter being moved from the holiday period to early next year. GTA has nothing to fear from being up against Black Ops 2 and Halo 4. I expect a trailer the day before E3 because that's how R* rolls.
Oh, and there's Agent which has been a fancy logo for three years. Will we see the PS3 exclusive at E3? Probably not.
